Step 1: Download the Application Checklist (Do This Today)

Step 2: Request Recommendation Letters Early
This is the step most students get wrong. Recommendation letters take time—from the person writing them, from school administrative processes, and from you in terms of identifying the right people to ask. Step 3: Draft Your Essay Before the Portal Opens
The personal essay is the most important part of the BFCF application. It’s what makes your application different from one with similar grades. You don’t need to have a finished draft by November 1, but you should have a clear idea of what you want to say.
Step 4: Understand What We’re Looking For
BFCF reviews applications blindly—all identifying information is removed before the committee reviews the materials. What rises to the top is academic growth and rigor, authentic community involvement, a clear personal statement, and demonstrated financial need. You don’t need a perfect GPA. You need a real story and a genuine record of showing up for your community.
